Michael J. Sagendorf Memorial Scholarship |

 The proposed scholarship would be awarded in the name of Michael Sagendorf, who passed away unexpectedly on January 19, 2006. At the time of his death, he was a Los Angeles Police Officer. He had previously worked as a deputy for the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department, and as an officer for the California Highway Patrol. Michael was passionate about two things: The law enforcement profession, and about equality. He learned to never be ashamed about who he was, and believed that any person, no matter what their gender, race or sexual orientation could, and ought to be given the chance to succeed in law enforcement. He never wanted nor expected special treatment, only equal treatment.

My name is Mark Hartness and I am an LSPT (psychiatric nurse,) retired from the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. I have recently earned a Masters degree in Grief and Bereavement Counseling and a second Masters in Pastoral Thanatology (spiritual issues at the end of life) and have worked with various Hospice organizations.
There are special issues and needs for those of us in the GLBT community at the time of nearing the end of life with a terminal diagnosis or death in the line of duty or suicide or murder... any mode of anticipatory terminal, sudden, accidental or violent death. Further, those of us in the LEO, Firefighter, and military communities face even more issues of disenfranchisement and other factors such as the stoicism and culture of "stuff your emotions" and expectations to "fight on and perform your duties" of our professions.
As part of Protect and Defend, I am offering my professional services for support / counseling at no charge to members and their life partners. Having caring friends means a lot at the time of a death loss. Still, to address matters of Complicated Grief, GLBT and disenfranchisement issues, requires some professional help.
